Glenwood City Cafe, Glenwood.

December 15, 2017

This unassuming cafe along the main drag in downtown Glenwood looks like a page out of the 1960s, with wood panelling and formica-topped tables in a long dining room.

It dates back a good long way. For decades, a lovely lady by the name of Jerrylene Vaughn was the piemaker in the house, and her peanut butter pie gained great renown. Ms. Jerry, as they called her, owned the City Cafe for 14 years before retiring, returning to school and becoming a certified nurses assistant. She worked at the Glenwood Nursing Center until 2002, and she passed away in 2006.

Other owners kept the establishment going, but when Caddo River Forest Products (the local lumber mill) shut down in 2010, businesses in the city's downtown had a hard time of things. City Cafe was closed from 2012 until May of 2017, when a revival in the city brought interest back to the area. The reopening of Caddo River Forest Products has greatly helped other businesses. Today, Susie Cantrell owns the eatery and the building it is in, and it is beginning to thrive.

The pies are all homemade at Glenwood City Cafe. The peanut butter pie is a rich, creamy icebox pie on a thin crumb crust with a little chocolate drizzle on top. Click here to see the pumpkin pie.
